Brookfield East has been the gold standard in boys track and field in the Greater Metro Conference. This week was no different.
The Spartans are well on their way to winning the league's triple crown after dominating the GMC Relays on May 3 at West Allis Hale High School, scoring 112.5 points to finish 25.5 points ahead of second-place Menomonee Falls.
Brookfield East can clinch its sixth GMC triple crown in eight years if it can claim its eighth consecutive conference outdoor title May 16 at Hart Park.
"We were solid at the relays," Brookfield East coach Mike Steiner said. "That meet is always a challenge, but our kids responded. Our seniors were excellent and a few younger kids really stepped up, which certainly helped."
The Spartans claimed first in the 4x800 in 8 minutes, 15.71 seconds with Brandon Hillery, Sam McTaggart, Joe Timm and Jan Wodnicki and in the distance medley in 10:51.97 with Jack Pitzen, Hillery, Wodnicki and McTaggart.
"We really looked good in the distance events," Steiner said. "Winning both the distance medley and 3,200 was important to the final outcome for us. That whole group ran well. Coach (Randy) Bucheger has done a great job getting them to this point, and they will only get faster."
Brookfield East also won the 300 hurdles relay with Avery Barnes (40.19), Abel Christiansen (42.55) and Alek Tyler (44.89), the triple jump relay with Cam Bauer (43-06), Ryan Mazza (40-03 1/4) and Caleb Wright (39-03 3/4) and the shot put relay with Matthew Johnston (53-03), Sam Santiago-Lloyd (48-07 1/2) and Adam Streich (45-08).
Barnes, Caleb Wright, Parbs and Williams were second in the 4x100 in 43.87 seconds. Justin Christiansen, Wright, Cam McDonald and Williams placed second in the 4x200 in 1:31.99. The Spartans were also the runner-up in the 4x400 in 3:34.46 with Barnes, Abel Christiansen, Hillery and Justin Christiansen and in the 3x100 shuttle hurdles in 48.54 seconds with Patrick Cartier, Wright and Alek Tyler.
"Avery (Barnes) had another solid meet and his time continues to drop in the 300's," Steiner said. "He's definitely headed in the right direction there. It's a good event for him."
The Spartans also were the runner-up in the pole vault relay with Parbs (13-00), Bauer (12-06) and Tristan Butkiewicz (11-06) and the long jump relay with Williams (21-02 3/4), Barnes (19-10 1/2) and Isaiah Windom (18-09 3/4).
