Led by second-place finishes from Saif Ibraheem, David Holzem and Caleb Wright, Brookfield East's wrestling took fifth place at the Greater Metro Conference tournament on Feb. 3 at Sussex Hamilton High School.
The Spartans finished with 150.5 points to finish in front of Sussex Hamilton and Brookfield Central. Menomonee Falls ran away with the team title with 246 points.
Holzem won by pin in 30 seconds over Marquette's Jack Kastenholz in his quarterfinal match at 132 pounds before earning an 11-6 decision over Brookfield Central's Dayveon Martin in the semifinals. He then fell, 6-1, to state-ranked Eric Wunsch of Menomonee Falls in the finals.
At 160 pounds, Ibraheem, who is honorable mention in the state rankings at 152 pounds, received a bye in the quarterfinals and won, 3-2, by ultimate tiebreaker over Josh McMahon of Menomonee falls in the semifinals. Sussex Hamilton's Jesse Fryda prevented Ibraheem from the title with a 3-2 decision in the championship.
Wright was the runner-up at 220 pounds, pinning Justin Schroeder of West Allis Hale in 36 seconds in the quarterfinals and winning a 17-6 major decision over Marquette's Charlie Gehringer in the semifinals before dropping a 10-7 decision to Brandon Schaefer of Menomonee Falls.
Dylan Thavong (106 pounds), Stephen Multhauf (120) and Hunter Fischer (138) all lost semifinal matches but wrestled back for third place, while Jacob Mandella (182) fell in the quarterfinals but bounced back with a tech fall and two pins to take third.
John Champe placed fourth at 285 pounds, Lucas Mandella was fifth at 113 pounds, Nick Martin took fifth at 195 pounds and Justin Bianco was sixth at 170 pounds.
The Spartans will wrestle at regionals at Brookfield Central on Saturday, Feb. 11, and sectionals are Saturday, Feb. 18, at West Allis Central.
