This time, Brookfield East didn't let a fourth-quarter lead slip away against Marquette.
The Spartans exacted revenge from an overtime loss a year ago by holding on for a 27-24 victory over the Hilltoppers on Aug. 25.
In last year's meeting between the two teams, Brookfield East took a 17-10 advantage with 39 seconds left only to watch Marquette tie the game and win in overtime.
But Brookfield East (2-0, 2-0 Greater Metro) sealed the deal Aug. 25. The Hilltoppers cut a 20-7 deficit to 20-17 heading into the fourth quarter, but a six-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sam McGath to Peyton Simon made it 27-17 with 7:35 left.
Marquette (0-2, 0-1) answered with an 11-yard touchdown run by Jimmy Ubert to pull to within 27-24 with 6:16 remaining. However, the Spartans defense wouldn't allow the Hilltoppers to complete the comeback.
McGath finished 6 of 9 for 95 yards and two touchdowns through the air and also ran for a team-high 58 yards on 17 carries.
Nick Pluemer carried the ball 14 times for 43 yards and a touchdown, Justin Christiansen ran for 47 yards and Caleb Wright had a 17-yard touchdown run.
